Sarah Ann Gill

1795 – 1866

Defender of religious freedom

Distinguished is level 3 of 4 in the Barbados Hall of Fame: sustained excellence over a career, widely honoured at home. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

A Methodist who kept her chapel open to worshippers after a mob destroyed the Methodist church in Bridgetown in 1823.

Gill defied threats and legal action from the island's assembly. She was the only woman among the ten National Heroes named in 1998.
