Clement Payne
1904 – 1941
Labour organiser whose deportation sparked the 1937 riots
Distinguished is level 3 of 4 in the Barbados Hall of Fame: sustained excellence over a career, widely honoured at home. See how the levels work.
Why they are here
A Trinidad-born organiser who urged Barbadian workers to form trade unions, and whose deportation in July 1937 set off island-wide unrest.
The disturbances that followed led to a royal commission and to the rise of organised labour and political parties in Barbados. Payne is a National Hero.
